What are landrace strains?

Landraces are cannabis varieties that adapted naturally to a specific region over generations, shaped by local climate, soil and traditional cultivation. They are the roots of modern cannabis: most of today’s hybrids trace back to a handful of landraces from Africa, Asia and the Americas. Growing them is a way to experience cannabis in its most authentic form.

Many landraces are sativas with long flowering times, tall structures and a clear, energetic effect. Others, like Afghan and Moroccan lines, were selected for resin and hash. Read more about the different types of cannabis and the origins of indica.

Tips for growing landraces

Landrace sativas can grow tall and take longer to flower than modern hybrids, so they reward growers with space, patience and a warm climate or a long indoor bloom. Give them room to stretch and avoid overfeeding: they evolved in natural conditions and usually prefer a lighter touch. Yes, all the landrace seeds in our shop are feminised, so every plant is female.

What is the difference between a landrace and a hybrid?

A landrace developed naturally in one region; a hybrid is a cross between different strains, often including landraces. Landraces tend to be more uniform in character and closer to the original plant.

Are landraces good for beginners?

Durban Poison is a great starting point: it is easy to grow and productive. Long-flowering sativas like Wild Thailand are better suited to growers with some experience.
