Benidorm, 2016

Benidorm. Sun, sea, skyscrapers... and a grow shop: Optigarden. It was ours (until we sold it on years later), and we sold the usual stuff: nutrients, growing media, lights, grow tents, tools.

Seeds? We didn't sell them. We gave them away to our customers. The more you bought, the more you got.

But a rubbish gift isn't a gift. So we went out of our way to make sure those seeds were up to scratch: well-known seed banks and a few breeders we'd got to know along the way, who had seriously good genetics.

The marker-pen bags

Before we knew it, we'd built up more than a dozen varieties. We handed them out in clear zip-lock bags, with the name scrawled on in permanent marker. No fancy packaging.

And then the inevitable happened: Optigarden customers kept coming back asking. "Here, what were those seeds? Which seed bank? Where can I buy them?"

Those little bags needed a name. A brand people could remember and ask for.

We didn't overthink it. We were buying and producing in bulk, by the big batch, so "Bulk" had to be in there. Bulk Seed Bank already existed, so we went with Bulk Genetics. It summed us up nicely. We registered bulkgenetics.com so nobody could nick it... and carried on giving seeds away as if nothing had happened.

2020: locked down with 50 varieties

Fast forward a few years. COVID, lockdown, shutters down. And there we were with more than 50 varieties across feminised, autoflowering and CBD.

The way out was obvious: an online shop. The seeds we'd been giving away in the grow shop for years would finally have a shop of their own, and for the first time you could actually buy them. We couldn't offer them on the Optigarden website for legal and advertising reasons (Google and Meta being Google and Meta), so Bulk Genetics moved into a home of its own.

And it worked. Better than we'd expected. Even though we still weren't a "proper" seed bank: we were still using our zip-lock bags and our marker pen. All handmade, all homegrown. We didn't want anything more, either: quality genetics at an affordable price.

And then things got a bit out of hand

With the website up and running, we caught the bug. First we tracked down breeders with the timeless classics. Then specialists in American genetics. Then those specific strains customers kept asking us for, again and again. And in the end, there was no stopping us: we became obsessed with getting more and more varieties. Always quality ones, mind you.

Because we've never been short of offers. Dozens of breeders have got in touch over the years. But we can't test everything, so we set ourselves a simple rule: we only work with breeders and seed banks we trust, the ones you see at the trade fairs or that come well recommended. No gambles.

Today: more than 400 varieties and counting

It's 2026 and our catalogue has passed 400 varieties. New ones arrive every month. Some have sold out because their breeders stopped producing them, but we haven't given up on them: we want to bring them back.

The goal is still the same as it was behind that counter in Benidorm, just bigger: to gather the largest collection of genetics we can and put it in your hands.
