Grandaddy Purple
Granddaddy Purple offers a unique experience with its delicious grape and berry flavour and potent, balanced effects. Easy to grow, this variety guarantees high yields and a deeply relaxing effect, making every moment pure pleasure and relaxation.
Granddaddy Purple is a legendary variety in the cannabis world, born in the hills of Northern California. Created in 2003 by breeder Ken Estes, it quickly rose to fame and won over growers and smokers alike. Also known as GDP, Grand Daddy Purple or Grandaddy Purple Kush, it is a perfect cross between the famous Mendocino Purple Kush and the sturdy Big Bud, inheriting the best of both worlds: a delicious berry flavour and outstanding stability and yield.
Granddaddy Purple is a predominantly indica plant, which shows in its pyramid-shaped structure that resembles a Christmas tree, especially when grown outdoors.
The buds are truly impressive: huge, very dense and covered in a sticky layer of resin that glistens under the light, giving them an almost snowy look. But what really stands out is their colour. As the name suggests, the buds tend to show beautiful purple hues, which deepen with cool nights, mixed with green and orange tones that make this plant a real spectacle.
Flavour and effects
As soon as you open the jar, its aroma wraps around you with a sweet, fruity fragrance reminiscent of ripe grapes and red berries, with a floral hint of violets. This aromatic profile carries straight through to the flavour, a delicious, complex blend that lingers on the palate and makes every toke a pleasure.
THC ranges between 15% and 20%, for a potent, long-lasting experience. Despite being an indica, its effects are well balanced. You will feel an initial wave of mental euphoria that leaves you relaxed and happy, followed by deep body relaxation that, surprisingly, keeps an energetic edge. That makes it an excellent choice both for unwinding after a long day and for those moments when you fancy a lift.
What is more, its low CBD content (< 1%) makes it ideal if you want deep relaxation without an overly heavy, couch-lock finish. It is perfect for switching off at the end of the day, which is why it is so popular with people looking for a full physical and mental wind-down.
Granddaddy Purple terpenes
The terpenes in Granddaddy Purple are behind its complex, delightful aromatic experience. This variety boasts a rich mix of camphene, linalool and valencene.
Camphene brings an earthy aroma with hints of pine that adds depth to the bouquet. Linalool, with its lavender-like floral scent, is associated with a mellow, calm high and makes every toke a pleasure. Finally, valencene, with its distinctive citrus aroma, adds a refreshing note that wakes up the senses and brings an energising touch.
These terpenes not only enrich the sensory experience of Granddaddy Purple but also underline its deeply relaxing effect. Whether you want to unwind after a long day or simply enjoy a slow evening, the terpenes in this variety work in synergy with its cannabinoids to give you a well-rounded experience.
Yield and flowering time
Indoors, Granddaddy Purple has a relatively short flowering time of around 8 to 9 weeks. During this period, the plants develop dense, resinous buds that can yield between 450 and 550 grams per square metre. Thanks to its compact, sturdy structure, it is perfect for techniques such as SOG (Sea of Green), which maximise yield in small spaces.
Outdoors, this variety thrives in the sun and reaches its full potential when planted out in early summer and harvested in early October, although some faster phenotypes can be ready by the end of September. Outdoor plants can reach up to 2.5 metres tall and yield between 700 and 900 grams per plant in optimal conditions.
How to grow Granddaddy Purple
Granddaddy Purple can be a hugely rewarding variety to grow, even if you are just starting out. Its robust genetics and growth habit make it ideal for novice and experienced growers alike.
Growing difficulty: this variety is fairly easy to grow. Granddaddy Purple does not need much fussing over and is quite forgiving of common beginner mistakes. Its Skunk heritage gives it remarkable resilience, making it a reliable, manageable plant.
Suitable climate and growing conditions: it prefers warm, dry climates like that of its native California. Ideal daytime temperatures range from 20 °C to 27 °C, with slightly cooler nights. Relative humidity should be kept at around 55–60% during the vegetative phase and lowered to 40% during flowering. Outdoors, we recommend planting out in early summer to harvest in early October.
Resistance to pests and diseases: Granddaddy Purple is quite resistant to pests and diseases, which makes it a safe choice for growers of all levels. Even so, good environmental control and regular checks are essential to prevent problems such as mites or mould. A quality substrate and good ventilation will also help keep your plants healthy.
