Feminized seeds are cannabis seeds that produce female plants in around 99% of cases. Only females produce buds, the flowers packed with resin, terpenes and THC, so you don't waste space or time on male plants. They're photoperiod plants: they start flowering when you cut the light down to 12 hours a day.
Grow from regular seeds and roughly half your plants will usually be males. Males don't give you buds; they produce pollen, and if they pollinate the females your harvest fills up with seeds. Feminized cannabis seeds take that problem off the table: there are no males to spot and pull, and every pot counts.
To make them, the breeder induces a female plant to produce pollen (a process known as sexual reversal) and uses it to pollinate another female. With no male involved in the cross, the offspring inherit two X chromosomes (XX) and turn out female. They're not genetically modified: it's a breeding technique that has been around for decades.
Because they depend on light, indoors you decide when flowering starts: plants grow under 18 hours of light (18/6) and switch to flowering at 12/12. Outdoors they flower on their own as the days get shorter, from late summer on.
If you're after the biggest harvest and want to control how big your plants get, go for feminized cannabis seeds. If speed matters more, you want several outdoor harvests a year or you're short on space, autoflowers are a better fit. Regular seeds are for breeders and for growers who want to select their own mother plants.

Within the feminized range you'll also find our fast flowering seeds: they're still photoperiod plants, but they can finish up to about 4 weeks earlier, depending on the strain, which is a real advantage outdoors wherever fall turns wet early, like the Pacific Northwest or the Northeast. If you'd rather not depend on the light cycle, check out our autoflower seeds; and if you want to breed your own genetics, our regular seeds.
Choose based on where you'll grow, how much space you have, how long you're willing to wait and what kind of plant you're after. With 270 strains in the catalog, these criteria help you narrow things down fast. Most of our feminized strains flower in 8–10 weeks indoors.
Look for compact, indica-dominant strains that flower in 8–9 weeks: they're easier to manage in a grow tent or spare room. As a rough guide, indoor growers fit between 4 and 9 plants per 10 square feet (about a 3x3 tent), depending on pot size and how long they veg. Techniques like SOG or SCROG help you fill the space and get the most out of just a few plants.
In most of the US, the usual approach is to plant out after your last frost, from April to June depending on your area or USDA zone, and harvest from late September into October. Outdoors, feminized plants grow big and yield far more than they do indoors. In the northern states, the Pacific Northwest or other cool, damp areas, go for early-flowering, mold-resistant strains. You'll find more ideas in our guide to the best marijuana seeds for outdoors.
Yield is measured in ounces per square foot indoors and ounces per plant outdoors, and it depends as much on light, space and veg time as it does on genetics. If quantity is the goal, look for strains with chunky buds and a well-branched structure, and give them enough time in veg before you flip to flowering.
If you want to harvest sooner, pick strains with a 7–8 week flowering time or go for our fast flowering seeds, which shorten the cycle while remaining photoperiod plants.
Indicas are compact, finish sooner and have a more relaxing, body-centered effect. Sativas grow taller, take longer to flower and give a more cerebral, uplifting high. Hybrids combine traits of both. Indica-dominant strains make up most of our feminized catalog. To dig deeper, read about cannabis indica and the different types of cannabis.
Start with forgiving, hardy strains like White Widow, Critical or Northern Lights. Avoid the kind of stress that can trigger male flowers: light leaks during the dark period, excessive heat or pruning in mid-flower.

Our feminized seeds are cheap because we buy and produce them in bulk, in large quantities, and you see that saving in the price. They reach you well protected in aluminum zip-lock bags, and the bigger the pack, the less you pay per seed. 69 of our feminized strains work out to $2 per seed in the 25-seed pack.
| Pack | From | Regular price |
|---|---|---|
| 3 seeds | $2.84 / seed | $11.34 / seed |
| 5 seeds | $2.50 / seed | $10.00 / seed |
| 10 seeds | $2.20 / seed | $8.80 / seed |
| 25 seeds | $2.00 / seed | $8.00 / seed |
There's no minimum order: you can pick up a single 3-seed pack to try a strain. If you need more, combine packs: two 25-seed packs give you 50 seeds, and four give you 100. When working out how many to buy, count the plants that fit in your space, allow a margin for the odd seed that doesn't germinate and, if you want to select the best phenotype, get a few extra of the same strain.

They're cannabis seeds that produce female plants in around 99% of cases. Only females produce buds, so you don't waste space on males. They're photoperiod plants: they flower when the light drops to 12 hours a day, indoors whenever you decide and outdoors at the end of summer.
It depends on your time, your space and the season. Feminized plants yield more and let you control how big they get. Autoflowers are faster (9–12 weeks from seed to harvest), more compact and allow several outdoor harvests a year. If you're not sure, take a look at our autoflower seeds.
For harvesting, feminized: there are no males to identify and no risk of them pollinating your females. Regular seeds make sense if you want to breed your own strains or select mother plants, because for that you need males.
Very rarely. What can happen is that a stressed plant puts out a few male flowers, which is known as hermaphroditism. To prevent it, make sure there are no light leaks during the dark period, keep the heat under control and don't prune in mid-flower.
The seed germinates in 1–5 days (we explain how in how to germinate cannabis seeds). Indoors, it takes 3–5 months from seed to harvest: 4–8 weeks of veg and 8–10 weeks of flowering. Outdoors you plant out after the last frost in spring and harvest from late September into October.
Work it out from the number of plants that fit in your space: indoors, roughly 4 to 9 per 10 square feet, plus one or two spares. The price per seed drops with the 10 and 25-seed packs, so they pay off if you grow several times or want to pick the best phenotype.
Almost all of them are these days, so they also produce female plants. The difference is that they flower on their own with age, regardless of how many hours of light they get.
