Buy cheap regular cannabis seeds to breed your own genetics: 7 photoperiod classics (Critical, Cheese, Big Bud, Blueberry, OG Kush, Amnesia and Jack Herer) that give you male and female plants in roughly equal numbers. They all cost the same: from $5.04 per seed in the 25-seed pack, with no minimum order. If you only want to harvest, all 7 also come in a feminized version, and you'll find the cheapest seeds in the store in cheap cannabis seeds.
Regular seeds are cannabis seeds produced by pollinating a female plant with pollen from a male, just like in nature. That's why they give plants of both sexes, roughly half male and half female, and they're the ones you need if you want to make your own crosses or keep pollen.
It's the traditional way of making seeds, the one growers used before feminized seeds existed, which is why many people call them "pure regular seeds": there's no sex reversal involved, just a selected male and a selected female. All of ours are photoperiod strains: they grow under 18 hours of light and flower when you switch to 12/12 indoors, or when the days get shorter outdoors.
They're made for breeders: picking a good male, making home crosses or hunting for a mother plant. If all you want is buds, feminized seeds are a better fit. You'll find a comparison of the three seed types in our guide to feminized seeds, and autos versus photoperiods in our guide to autoflower seeds.
We stock 7 regular strains, all photoperiod classics and all at the same price. The fastest is Critical Regular, ready to harvest 45–55 days after the switch to 12/12. The longest are Amnesia Regular and Jack Herer Regular, two sativas that need 10–12 weeks of flowering (70–77 days for Amnesia) and plenty of room.
| Strain | Type | Flowering from 12/12 | Outdoor height | Indoor yield (oz/sq ft) | Outdoor harvest |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Critical Regular | Indica-dominant | 45–55 days | Up to 8 ft | Up to 1.8 | Late September or early October |
| Cheese Regular | Slightly indica-dominant | 50–60 days | Around 8 ft on average | Up to 2.0 | First or second week of October |
| Big Bud Regular | Indica-dominant | 55 days | 6.5–8 ft | Up to 2.0 | Late September |
| Blueberry Regular | Indica-dominant | 55 days | Usually under 6.5 ft | 1.3–1.5 | Late September or early October |
| OG Kush Regular | Indica-dominant | 55–60 days | 8–10 ft | Up to 1.6 | First or second week of October |
| Amnesia Regular | Sativa-dominant | 70–77 days | Up to 11.5 ft | Up to 2.0 | Second half of October |
| Jack Herer Regular | Sativa-dominant | 10–12 weeks | 8–10 ft | Up to 2.1 | Second half of October |
Indoor yield is the figure each product page gives under a 300–350 W LED; yours will depend on your light and your space. Where summers are short, like the Pacific Northwest, the Northeast or the northern states, go for the early finishers such as Big Bud Regular; Amnesia and Jack Herer do best with long summers like California's or the South's and, indoors, are usually grown in a SCROG. If you want a distinctive aroma for your crosses, Blueberry Regular tastes of blueberries and Cheese Regular of aged cheese. And for an American classic there's OG Kush Regular, a West Coast legend.
All 7 also come in a feminized version, in case you'd rather harvest only females of the same strains: Critical Mass, Cheese, Big Bud, Blueberry, OG Kush, Amnesia and Jack Herer.
Each plant reveals its sex through its pre-flowers, which appear at the nodes of the stem around the fourth to sixth week of veg or, at the latest, a week or two after the switch to 12/12. Males form small closed balls, the future pollen sacs; females show a teardrop-shaped calyx with two white hairs.
Use a magnifier to check where each branch meets the stem. A male puts out round balls on a short stalk, which tend to show up in clusters and a little earlier than female flowers. A female shows an elongated calyx with two pistils, the white hairs that turn orange toward the end of flowering. If you're not sure, wait a few days. If both appear on the same plant, it's a hermaphrodite: treat it as a male.
Pollen sacs usually take a couple of weeks to open, but don't take the risk: as soon as you've confirmed a plant is male, pull it from the grow. If you want to keep it for breeding, move it to another room: a little pollen is enough to pollinate the whole space. A trick for sexing without risk: take a clone from each seedling, label it and put it on 12/12. The clones will tell you the sex of each plant while the plants themselves keep growing under 18 hours of light.
Each seed has roughly a 50% chance of being female, but the split isn't exact: 10 seeds might give you 5 females, or 3, or 7. That's why it pays to sow extra. We've worked out how many you need to get the females you're after 9 times out of 10, based on that 50% chance and assuming every seed germinates.
| Females you want | Seeds to sow | Packs that fit |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 4 | 1 × 5 |
| 2 | 7 | 1 × 10 |
| 3 | 9 | 1 × 10 |
| 4 | 12 | 1 × 10 and 1 × 3 |
| 5 | 14 | 1 × 10 and 1 × 5 |
| 10 | 26 | 1 × 25 and 1 × 3 |
If you also want to pick a good male, sow more: the more you have to compare, the better your choice will be.
With regular seeds you can run the whole breeding cycle at home: choose the best male, collect his pollen, pollinate a branch of your favorite female and harvest your own seeds. You can also hunt among your females for the mother plant you'll take clones from for years.
Choose the male for vigor, structure, the smell when you rub the stem and the traits you want to pass on. When the sacs start to open, lay paper under the branches, or slip a branch into a paper bag and shake it gently. Sift the pollen to remove bits of flower, let it dry for a day or two and store it in an airtight jar: it keeps for weeks in the fridge and months in the freezer.
Pollinate when the female is two or three weeks into flowering and her pistils are still white. Switch off the fans first and use a small brush to apply the pollen to just one or two branches, which you'll label: the rest of the plant will keep producing seedless buds. The seeds take about 4–6 weeks to mature and are ready when they look dark, hard and striped, and the calyx around them starts to split. Then dry them and store them somewhere dark and cold; we explain how in how to store cannabis seeds.
If you cross two strains, say a Blueberry Regular female with a Cheese Regular male, you get the F1, a first generation that mixes traits from both parents. If you cross F1 plants with each other, the F2 comes out far more varied, and that's where you look for the combination you want. To lock in a trait from one of the parents you do a backcross: you cross the offspring with that parent, usually using a clone of the mother. Keep notes, pollen and clones from every step.
A mother plant is a female you keep in veg permanently, under 18 hours of light, to take clones that are identical to her. Many growers prefer to look for one among regulars because they consider them more stable. Sow several, take a clone from each female and grow the clones through to harvest: the mother of the best clone is the one you keep. To take a clone, cut a tip with two or three nodes at an angle, remove the lower leaves and root it in high humidity. According to their product pages, Critical, Big Bud, Blueberry, Cheese and OG Kush Regular are all well suited to SOG with clones.
All 7 regular strains cost the same, and the bigger the pack, the less you pay per seed: from $7.33 in the 3-seed pack down to $5.04 in the 25-seed pack. They're cheap because we buy and produce them in bulk, and there's no minimum order.
| Pack | Price | Price per seed |
|---|---|---|
| 3 seeds | $22 | $7.33 |
| 5 seeds | $32 | $6.40 |
| 10 seeds | $56 | $5.60 |
| 25 seeds | $126 | $5.04 |
For breeding, the 25-seed pack makes the most sense: more plants to choose your male and female from, and the lowest price per seed. If what you want is the lowest price for a harvest, six of the feminized versions of these strains (all except Blueberry) work out to $2 per seed in the 25-seed pack; you'll find them alongside many more in cheap cannabis seeds. That they aren't feminized: they come from crossing a male and a female and give plants of both sexes, roughly half of each. It's the traditional way of producing cannabis seeds, and the one you need for breeding, because only regular seeds give you males.
It depends on what you're after. For harvesting, feminized: almost every plant is female and you don't have to weed out males. For breeding, regular: they give you males for making crosses and more plants to choose a mother from. All 7 of our regular strains also come in a feminized version.
It's another name for regular seeds: they come from a male and a female plant, with no sex reversal, the way seeds have always been produced. "Pure" doesn't mean they come from an unmixed genetic line; many regulars, like Cheese Regular, are crosses.
Look at the pre-flowers that appear at the nodes of the stem, around the fourth to sixth week of veg or shortly after the switch to 12/12. If you see small closed balls, it's a male; if you see a teardrop-shaped calyx with two white hairs, it's a female. A magnifier helps you spot it sooner.
Half, on average, but in a small pack the split varies. From 10 seeds you can expect around 5 females, and 9 times out of 10 you'll get at least 3. If you need a specific number of females, sow more seeds than you think you need.
Since they're photoperiod strains, the plants start flowering when you switch to 12/12. Across our 7 strains, flowering runs from 45–55 days for Critical Regular to 10–12 weeks for Jack Herer Regular. Outdoors they're harvested between late September and the second half of October, depending on the strain.
There's no reason to think so: potency depends on genetics and on how you grow, not on the type of seed. What many growers value in regulars is that they consider them more stable and that they let you breed and select.
